Chapter Eleven
This had to have been the funniest time through the portal yet. I stepped in after Joe and felt the familiar and always strange whoosh of liquid air swirl around me, but this time, as I fell, all I could hear was the young Rabbit.
He alternated between screams of terror and the whoops and laughs of someone riding their first ever roller coaster, and I couldnât help but laugh the entire time.
By the time we landed on the other side and crawled out from the roots, Chantara was wiping tears of laughter from her eyes, and my sides ached.
âOh, man!â Joe jumped to his feet and punched the air again. âWe have to do that shit again! I think I might have crapped myself just a little bit, but holy fuck, that was so awesome!â
I laughed more and doubled over. This was one of the best ab workouts of my life. If having Joe around was going to be this funny, Iâd have washboard abs before the week was up.
But we were back in Pyregate now, and we had a war to fight.
âGlad you enjoyed it, bro,â I said with a smile. âBut weâve got to keep a low profile when we step out of here. Youâre going to see some crazy shit, and Iâll explain everything I can when weâre somewhere safe, but for now, just keep your eyes open and your mouth shut, got it?â
âGot it, boss.â Joe straightened up and snapped right into Rabbit mode.
Chantara smiled sweetly at the young Rabbit, and she had a kind warmth to her that made me think sheâd already adopted Joe as her younger brother.
I stuck my head out of the gap in the wall and saw it was dusk in Pyregate. The sky was a deep purple, and the stars had just begun to emerge as the sun faded away. Suddenly, I thought of one extra thing Joe might need to know before he spotted it himself, and his mouth ran away with him.
âOne more thing,â I muttered as I glanced back at the younger man. âJust a quick heads up, there are two moons here, but remember to keep it stealthy from here on out.â
Joeâs eyes widened to the size of dinner plates, but he kept his mouth shut and just nodded.
I led the way, Joe followed me, and Chantara took the rear. The bags were starting to get heavy, but it was worth the shoulder ache to get all these weapons back to Bazâs place.
I took us through the tightly packed maze of shacks in the Shambles and was grateful there didnât appear to be anyone out on the streets. I heard a few muffled conversations through the shabby walls, but everyone stayed inside their little homes.
Soon, we were back into the scruff lands and headed toward the south forest. I scanned the surroundings, and it seemed weirdly quiet. I wondered if there was something going on in the town or if the witches had put some kind of curfew in place.
